Steps To Help You Organize Your House
Reorganizing your home can seem like a serious undertaking, but moving into a new home allows you to start this process fresh since you are starting with an empty space. When your living space is well-organized, you spend less time searching for needed items and feel less stressed overall. Here are a few steps to help you organize before and after moving into a new house.
Decrease Clutter
One good way to get started with the organization process is to throw away items you no longer need even before you begin packing at your former house. Things such as gently used clothing, books, and toys can be donated to thrift stores or shelters for people in need. Once you get rid of things you no longer have a use for, the real organization can begin. For example, it is important to label your boxes properly before taking them to your new residence to get a head start with setting up. Place each box in the appropriate room before unloading.
People who plan on downsizing their living space are particularly interested in decreasing clutter. Some ways to do this include:
- Checking for duplicate items
- Downloading digital books and music rather than keeping physical books and CDs
- Giving yourself time to sort through all your belongings, and allowing yourself to keep sentimental items or items of monetary value
Whatever your plan, have a purpose for each large item you keep.
Consider Closets
Closets are sometimes an underutilized space in a home. If you have a closet where you hang clothes or store linen, there is probably room underneath those items to store larger goods, depending on the size of the closet. For example, if you want to store a smaller ladder in your home, you can lay it sideways in a closet to pull out anytime.
Some ladder accessories, such as safety rails, can also be stored around the same space for easy access. Closets are a great place to store items that may look unsightly in an open room. If you have additional table lamps, decorations, or similar, your home can look more organized when those are kept behind closed doors.
Use Dividers
Many people have a "junk drawer" in their house. While this is convenient for quickly putting miscellaneous goods in, it can eventually lead to even more of a mess to clean or shuffle through. Rather than throwing items in haphazardly, use dividers in the drawer that can help separate where you want each item to go.
The same is true for closets and other storage rooms. If possible, get some large plastic bins to place things like towels and utensils that you do not usually use. This not only helps you to stay more organized in your home but saves space as well.
Organize Daily
Moving into a new home is stressful, and this undertaking can make it challenging to keep up with the demands of cleaning and staying organized. Fortunately, it is much easier to stay organized on a daily basis, by doing a little at a time, than it is to organize a bunch of things at once. Try keeping a schedule of which room to organize on what day and enlist the help of other family members if needed. Mobile applications can greatly assist this process and help you to keep track of organizing without needing a separate pen and paper.
Organization can be hard work. However, the payoff comes in the form of peace of mind and better time management because you are less likely to be stressed out or constantly searching for items in your home.
