11 Home Renovation Ideas to consider on a Budget

It’s the start of a new decade once again, and do you know what needs a new look? Your home. Renovating the look of your house this year will not only bring freshness to your life, but it will also change the atmosphere of your entire home.

Hence, in this article, we’d like to share with you our tried-and-tested home renovation ideas that we have handpicked for those who are on a strict budget. Excited? Then let’s get started!

Change Your Home’s Colors!

The easiest and cheapest (yet still very drastic) way to change the look of your home is to refresh its colors. There are two ways to do this:

  • Paint. The first way is to simply repaint everything. It’s fun to do with friends and family, but we’ve found it calming to do by yourself. Two of the trendiest colors this year are champagne and charcoal, but don’t be afraid to color your home in any color that you want. It’s like what Marie Kondo says. Choose the things (and colors) that spark joy.

By the way, don’t forget to consider your family’s favorite colors, especially if you’re going to repaint their rooms as well.

  • Wallpaper. The second way to change the colors of your walls is to replace or install new rolls of wallpaper. While we enjoy painting over painstakingly installing wallpaper, we can’t ignore that this is still the best route if you want to add a pattern to your walls. Afraid that you’re going to ruin your walls? Then we recommend opting for stick-on wallpaper. It’s like a really large, and most of the time removable, sticker for your walls.

Install Crown Molding

Another way to spruce up your walls is to install crown molding. Don’t beat yourself up trying to figure out how to cut those corners with a miter saw. There are easy-to-install crown moldings now made from a lightweight foam material that you can easily cut with a hand saw and you can just stick to your walls using a joint compound.

Refresh Your Kitchen

They say that the kitchen is the heart of the home. It’s also one of the interior spaces that get used the most. We understand, however, that a complete kitchen renovation can cost a lot of money. Fortunately, there are some ways to change the look of your kitchen without damaging your budget. Here are some of them:

  • The Cabinets. Your walls are not the only surfaces that can use some color. You can also change the finish of your kitchen cabinets too.

  • The Backsplash. Just like the sticker wallpaper we’ve mentioned earlier, did you know that there are sticker tiles as well? This is a cheap yet effective alternative to retiling your kitchen’s backsplash.

  • The Counter. Finally, you can also use the same method on your kitchen counter. Get those marble countertops by using a self-adhesive countertop sticker. Almost anything can be updated with stickers these days. You’ll be surprised.

Home Decorations

There are times when you don’t really need to change the main elements of your home to give it a new look. Sometimes, even by simply changing its smaller details, like your home decor, can already make a big impact.

Carpets and Rugs

For instance, you can already change the look of any room by simply adding or changing its carpets and rugs. What we like about this method is that most of the time, your guests won’t be able to put their finger on what changed in your interiors. They just know that something did. That’s part of the fun of it!

You can either tie a space together with a wide area rug, or you can pile different carpets on top of each other for added interest and coziness.

Lighting

Here’s a way of changing the ambience of a room instantly: installing new light fixtures. Before you do that, though, we suggest that you consider the different lighting needs of each area first. For instance, you need bright lights in your living room and kitchen. On the other hand, you would want softer lighting in your bedrooms to make them more inviting and relaxing.

Don’t spend on a brand new fixture as well. You will find a lot of one-of-a-kind accent pieces in vintage shops and thrift stores.

Here’s a pro tip: Don’t be a plain jane and buy matching lamps. Instead, why don’t you experiment by mixing around different pieces? Just make sure that they match the overall theme that you’re going for in each room.

Refresh Your Bathroom

Here’s another expensive room to remodel: the bathroom. Fortunately, you can easily refresh your bathroom by caulking it anew. It’s very easy and cheap to do. You just have to be meticulous to make sure that it stays long.

Revive Your Porch

When was the last time you made changes to your porch? Do you remember the original color of its wooden floors? How about your Adirondack chairs? You’ll be surprised what a pressure washer can do to refresh your memory.

While having a pressure washer at home is really handy, we don’t necessarily suggest for you to buy one. Just ask around. We’re sure one of your friends will be happy to lend it to you over a weekend.

Manage Your Clutter

Finally, sometimes the biggest changes are those that your guests really wouldn’t see, but they’re something that can drastically improve the quality of your life. That’s what we’re going for, after all. Hence, why don’t you install new organization systems in your closets, kitchen cabinets, home office, and other areas that serve as catch basins for clutter?

So you see? Changing the look of your home doesn’t have to be expensive to make a difference. You just have to think outside of the box and flex those creative muscles of yours. If there’s one tip that we’d want you to take away from our entire article, though, it’s this: you don’t have to go big to make an impact. Sometimes, the small details like switching out your decor, or the simple actions of cleaning your porch can already make a significant change to the look of your entire home.
